Salad every day?

November 12th, 2009 · 5 Comments · Dinner

Thanks for your great comments about my last Intuitive Eating post. I will definitely get into the principles of Intuitive Eating more in an upcoming post. Can’t wait to discuss it a little further!

I finally got home tonight around 9:30 after a long but fulfilling day…gastric bypass support group is always so inspiring – the stories of how people’s lives change after losing 200 pounds are amazing.

I had a quick dinner from the hospital cafe…grilled chicken whole-wheat wrap….

Quick Question and Answer…

Lena asked – Does eating salad everyday for lunch for the rest of your life count as dieting? Is it considered healthy form of eating? My friend has embarked on that in order to lose weight and she has claimed it works. Thanks.

Ooh- Good question, Lena. First, I’m a huge salad fan – I eat a salad usually one or two days a week for lunch, sometimes even 3. But, I eat salad because I love it and I love the opportunity to get in a bunch of veggies at one meal. I also always add a protein of some sort, either chicken, or egg, or edamame, to make it more of a complete meal. So, on one hand, it is possible to eat salad every day and with lots of variety- that could be healthy. However, I worry more about the mindset- sounds like a dieting mentality. Most people will not be able to continue eating salad for lunch every single day long term….and there are certainly lots of other good healthy lunch options. So, my advice would be if someone really wanted to eat salads all the time- to mix it up, add protein, add some healthy carbohydrate like fruit, crackers, or bread. However, I would strongly encourage your friend to consider long-term alternatives that allow for variety…what about salad one day, a sandwich and fruit the next, maybe dinner leftovers the next day….long-term, that is more likely to last. Hope that helped.

Linda asked what brand of goji berries I use- the ones I had for breakfast this morning were from EarthFare in the bulk bins.

Have a great Thursday evening…Goodnight!

I’m a salad lover too and enjoy 2-3 salads a week if not more :)

I really only like salad with it is coupled with protein & carbs. For some reason I have to have a piece of brad or crackers when I eat a salad! I’m curious as to what the goji berries taste like so I may have to pick up some.
    Have a great weekend!

goji berries are really sweet, like cranberries and they are known to be very good for eye sight, at least in the chinese culture… Angie, thanks for the tip on salad eating… i love salad too but i too need it with either some form of carb and protein but not on its own everyday… well, i’ll speak to her when the opportune rises… :) have a great day!

I agree. I loveee salads, but if I were to eat a simple salad everyday for lunch, I’m not sure I’d be satisfied. Also, unless jazzed up, salads alone won’t provide enough nutrients or substantial energy for the body. However, tons and tons of protein and carb items can be added to salads to make them never get old, and to make them a substantial daily meal.

I really think she asked a great question. I think many people associate eating salad with watching what you eat or dietiting. great response.
